Winter Skin Care Routine // Blogmas 2015

Winter is mostly my favourite time of year but it poses one huge problem for me: it makes my skin go crazy. I usually have combination/oily skin and I get a few breakouts. But, come Winter time, my skin is as dry as the Sahara and if I slack on any of my facial skin care routine I pretty much end up in break-out city. Eurgh.

This year I think I've actually come up with the code to unlocking nice skin for the winter time!

#Bubblebeard for Decembeard // Blogmas 2015

I'm sure many of you have heard about the campaign Decembeard, where guys grow a beard in the month of December to help raise money to beat bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK so it's a really important cause that we all should be aware of. I personally would really struggle to grow a beard so I've always felt like I've missed out on this campaign... that is until now!

Bathstore have teamed up with Decembeard to challenge every single person in the nation to grow a beard for charity - there's no excuse as we all can grow our own Bubblebeards! I had a go at this challenge to grow my very own, majestic bubble beard and, working in a shop that is known for it's bath bombs and bubble baths, I was very much up for this challenge!

I have to admit, bubble beards are much harder than I first thought...

How to Unwind during Christmas // Blogmas 2015

This time of year is hectic - especially to those who are not huge fans of Christmas time! It is important to give yourself time to relax this time of year otherwise you don't reap the benefits of having a few days away from your regular schedule.

Unless you want to run around like a headless chicken, then please take a few moments to chill out and treat yourself! I've suggested a few ways that I like to unwind and spend my Christmases, and ways that help me make the most of my time off.

Make your own Christmas Eve Box // Blogmas 2015

A Christmas Eve box is something that I have always considered a lovely idea. The premise of a Christmas Eve box is a little pack of pre-presents to alert you that Santa is on his way and it's probably time to snuggle up in bed before he comes.

These Christmas Eve boxes are the perfect extra gifts for loved ones; Imagine heading up to bed and seeing this cute little surprise parcel at the end of the bed! Here are some ideas on what you can include in your own Christmas Eve boxes.

Christmas Sugar Cookies // Blogmas 2015

Every Winter, my Mom makes delicious sugar cookies in festive shapes. It's kind of a tradition to decorate them in the least professional way because nothing beats the home made look (although this year we actually made a piping bag out of greaseproof paper!). And you always have to put a bit of a strange looking one in there, right?! Not every bake can be Mary Berry approved - we are only human haha!

Sugar cookies are really simple to whip up and can be made last minute as they don't need a huge amount of ingredients or time. They are fun to make too, especially with kids or friends.

10 Life Lessons from 'Elf'. // Blogmas 2015

Elf / New Line Cinema
I am obsessed with the Christmas film Elf. Will Ferrell is hilarious in the film and he captures Buddy the elf's personality so well! I think I watch it about 10 times every year in December and I'm pretty convinced that Buddy is my soul elf. Is soul elf a thing? It is now! ...

Elf actually has some great life lessons we could all learn from in this day and age so, without further ado, I present to you the ten life lessons we all learn from Elf.

Christmas at my House // Blogmas 2015

I love it when I'm walking down the street and having a quick peek into people's windows to see their Christmas decorations. My Mom always picks little themes for our rooms to fit with Christmas but this year she has stripped back a lot of her decorations. It still looks beautifully festive, so I thought I'd share a few of my favourite decorations we have this year.

Christmas Party Make-Up Inspiration // Blogmas 2015

Christmas parties are the perfect excuse to get glammed up and pull off a brand new make-up look you wouldn't usually wear. One of my goals for next year is to do more make-up tutorials on my YouTube (I used to do loads years ago before losing confidence) so I've been watching a lot of the beauty gurus on YouTube for inspiration.

As far as party make up goes, I tend to opt for smokey eyes, dark lips or glitter looks. I like pushing boundaries but I still like to wear make up that is easy to pull off! I have picked out three beauty looks that I adore for the festive party season and popped in a link so you can recreate the looks for yourselves!

5 Christmas things you HAVE to buy from Lush // Blogmas 2015

Lush Cosmetics never fail to deliver with their Christmas product range and 2015 is no difference. Clothes Show Live, 2015 // Blogmas 2015

This year I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Clothes Show Live again. I actually won a competition by Paper Dolls who gave me two free tickets so I took my friend Jodie along with me fo a day of shopping and fashion. Last year, I was really dissapointed with the Clothes Show because the shopping area wasn't too good so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect this year.

My Memories of Birmingham // Blogmas 2015

Living so close to the city and being a frequent visitor, Birmingham has always been a place I hold close to my heart. I remember as a child being taken there for days out shopping with my family and then, as I got older, catching the bus into the town to do some shopping with my friends. I travel through it every day now to get to work!

But what never ceases to amaze me is, even in the twenty or so years I've been visiting it, how much Birmingham has changed and evolved. The most obvious, and somewhat recent hot topic of Birmingham tourists and residents, is the new Grand Central terminal at New Street Station. As I pass through the centre of the city every day, I can't help but reflect on all my memories made in Birmingham and how amazing the city really is.

Peppermint Cookie Bark recipe // Blogmas 2015

Peppermint bark has always been an illusive treat I have been wanting to try for what seems forever, not realising it's actually incredibly easy to make yourself! After trying a few recipes and tweaking the ones I liked, I came up with this easy one for Peppermint Cookie Bark. If I do say so myself, it tastes absolutely delicious!

#ManOnTheMoon & Age UK: No One Should have No One // Blogmas 2015

This year’s #ManOnTheMoon advert by John Lewis tugged at the heart strings. Every year I cry at the advert (yeah I’m that soppy) but this year’s subject really hit home on a topic I feel a strong attachment to. No one should have no one, especially the elderly.

Why I Love Christmas // Blogmas 2015

It’s December which means that here on Geek Gets Glam it’s #GGGDoesBlogmas, meaning I there will be a blog post every day of December! It also means it’s the magical month of Christmas… a word you’re either over the moon to hear or sick to death of seeing already.

I have to say, I am one of those super annoying Christmas-loving people. It’s funny really because my family aren’t religious and there is no special occasion around Christmas that I also celebrate (apart from my sister’s birthday on the 19th). I just love being annoyingly festive. I am a real life Will Ferrell Buddy the Elf, and there are so many reasons why you should be too!

Cheerz Christmas Photo Box

I am a huge fan of printing photographs. Call me old fashioned but scrolling through a roll of digital photos on my phone or laptop just doesn't cut it for me; I love the feel of real photographs and having a material keepsake of your favourite memories.

When the team at Cheerz, an app that allows you to bring your Instagram, Facebook and other digital memories to life by printing and presenting them, got in touch with me asking if I'd like to try out their brand new Christmas Cheerz Box I jumped at the chance! And, I have to say, I couldn't be more over the moon with what I received.

Easy DIY Christmas Candles with #24DaysOfWren

Everybody loves candles - especially this time of year when you can light one to make your room feel extra cosy. I've been challenged by Wren Kitchens for their #24DaysofWren festive calender to come up with my own festive DIY favourite and mine is, of course, a lovely little candle.

Candles make wonderful presents and they are really quite easy to make. As some of you may or may not know, I have started my own shop called The Wonderland Candle Company, selling book-inspired scented candles, so I know a thing or two about making a fantastic candle and I'm going to share my method to make your own, super simple Christmas candles.

The Halloween #ScreamHome Bake-Off Party

Want to throw your own Halloween party? Fear not... there is still plenty of time to get your place Scream  Home ready! This year I thought I'd keep it simple by doing little spooky get together. The team at Ocean Finance have written a great blog post to give you more ideas on how you can celebrate in your home this year, and they challenged me to have my very own #screamhome party inspired by what I think makes things most spooky.

My top tip is keep it simple - do what I did and just buy a few horror films, put on some spooky themed food and invite some friends and family (to eat cake to make you feel better after watching so many scary films). Of course, I combined my love for The Great British Bake Off with this spooky holiday - what's a party without cake?! On a serious note, I find the simple effects more effective when it comes to scaring. I am terrified of the dark, ghosts and blood so I found ways to incorporate these in my party evening.

SET THE SCENE - HORROR FILMS IN THE DARK

I think it's vital to set the scene for a horror scream home evening. Dim all the lights, carve up pumpkins and get some spooky looking bunting. I decided to go a bit Gothic with my setting and lit a load of candles in my living room where we would be watching films. Yankee Candle have a gorgeous range of Halloween themed candles which I used for the night. It gave such an eerie atmosphere.

Not so luckily for me, my best friend Emily LOVES horror films, the scarier the better, so we ended up getting The Babadook and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. I have to admit that Paranormal Activity didn't scare me as it was virtually the same as the previous films in the series and it was very predictable. The Babadook, on the other hand, is terrifying and features the creepiest child, and his demon friend, you will ever encounter. Need I say more? I was hidden behind my pillow for most of that one.

TRICK OR TREAT?! HALLOWEEN BAKES

Now, on to the fun part - Halloween themed cakes! Have you seen those Pinterest fail pictures? I kinda think mine would have a nice place on those types of websites but never the less I will show you what I came up with!

First of all, the easy ones: Graveyard Ghost Brownies. These were pretty simple actually! I previously blogged about my perfect chocolate brownie recipe and I used that one for these. Then I made up some sugar icing, placed a marshmallow on top and dotted some eyes on with blood red food colouring. These look no where near as impressive as the Pinterest version. In fact, they looked more like zombie heads than little ghosts. They tasted nice though. Win.

Next up is the Glass Cupcakes. Now these took a bit more effort and a lot more time. I made the cupcakes with a cake mix from Sainsbury's but to be honest I think  I could have saved money by making a cake mix from scratch, and it would have tasted better. The icing on the top is, again, just plain sugar icing with red food colouring splashed and smeared across the top. The glass is made up of boiled sugar. I used Lily Vanilli's recipe, but inevitably messed it up a little. The 'glass' went a bit brown and didn't set very quick. Luckily my Mom was around to help fix my mess and we managed to recreate the sugar glass. In fact, I thought these were going to look awful but they turned out pretty great! The glass is such a great touch and it makes them look gruesome- they would be a perfect centre piece to any Halloween party.

It just goes to show you can have a brilliant night in without having to spend a load of money. I managed to buy decorations, ingredients, DVDs and some drinks for less than I would have spent on a night out and I had equally as much fun. Why not make it a bigger event and ask everyone to dress up for the occasion? Let me know in the comments what you will be up to this Halloween :)

YooHoo Mail October Stationery Box

Like a lot of people, I am obsessed with stationery. When I first heard about YooHoo Mail, a monthly subscription box full of stationery, I was curious to find out more and excited to receive the October edition of the box. The contents of the box are created by UK graphic designer Gemma. Each box is created by herself and shipped straight to your door - perfect for us stationery addicts!

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I was waiting for my box but I was delighted once I did get it! It is beautifully wrapped in tissue and comes in a deceptively small box. Once I opened the box and ripped through the tissue, I was amazed at how many things were included in my box!

Included in the October box are three postcards, six greetings cards, two prints and two wall planners. I was amazed! The quality of each item is fantastic. You can tell that time has been spent carefully picking designs and printing them on good quality card. I like the fun design of the cards and prints, I can see myself framing them and hanging them on my wall. The planners are great, especially the 'To-Do list' style one which I think I might laminate and have as a re-usable list for my week. I am most impressed with the greetings cards - I now have a good collection of cards for every occasion and I cannot wait to share them with my friends.

There are a limited number of these boxes available so if you are a stationary fan, I'd recommend spending the £12 on it and getting in there quick. I like the idea of supporting a more independent designed company, especially when the quality of the stationery is so flipping great! You can save money too buy ordering a three month subscription which is perfect for the ultimate stationery fix :)

Santa's Belly Shower Jelly // LUSH Christmas 2015

I'm not gonna lie, I'm obsessed with the festive shower jellies from Lush this year. This is the last one I'm reviewing and it is one of my favourite products from this year - this is the Santa's Belly shower jelly.

The jelly itself has the same fragrance as the So White bath bomb which is a crisp apply fragrance. The ingredients make it sound edible - it's full of fresh apple juice and vegan red wine which help keep your skin nourished and cleansed. Plus, you smell great and the fragrance is left on the skin after. I much prefer this to last year's So White shower gel because I find it more moisturising and I personally find the smell more appealing (I wasn't too mad on the shower gel to be honest). It leaves your skin feeling very soft after washing with it. I love that there are little stars in the top of the jelly too - it looks so Christmassy and cute! You can even use this as a bubble bath which would be perfect if you love using a So White bath bomb ;)

Shower jellies seem to last forever so I tend to chop mine up to get through them at a reasonable rate. I also find they lather much better if they are in chunks and the crushed into a shower scrunchie. I'm a huge fan of this Santa's Belly jelly and I think it makes a perfect stocking filler for your friends and family (just make sure you pick up one for yourself too!).

A day at Bristol Zoo

Recently I spent the weekend in Bristol and I knew one of the things I wanted to do was check out Bristol Zoo. I had heard wonderful things about the zoo and how they care for their animals, plus I had heard they had sloths which are my favourite animal, so I was excited for my day out there!

It is not the biggest zoo I have been to however it is one of the more memorable zoo experiences I have had. The staff were all really happy and obviously cared immensely about the welfare of their animals. The gorilla enclosure was closed for the public when I went because they were introducing a new animal there and I thought that said a lot about the amount of care going to these animals' lives - they aren't just expected to be on show all the time and they are given time to settle in their new environments which, as an animal lover, makes me happy :) The animals I did get to see were fantastic. I particularly enjoyed the fur seals who were very vocal! I was delighted to get the chance to see some sloths too. I almost didn't notice them until Nick turned me round and made me walk back through until I spotted them haha! I loved that you could walk through the fruit bat enclosure which is something I usually avoid (I hate walking through those bat places where the fly around you) but the zoo keepers were friendly and reassuring, meaning I got to see an amazing animal close up.

I also have to commend the food at Bristol zoo. Bit of an unusual thing to talk about when reviewing a zoo but I can honestly say that it was the best food service I've had at a zoo or wildlife park. The food was real food, not some crappy takeaway style stuff, and it looked like it had all been made fresh by the chefs. It's nice to have a substantial meal when you're walking around all day and the food tasted great. I had a quick look on the website and it turns out it is all local, ethical and from sustainable sources too which is amazing and I really appreciate it!

I cannot recommend Bristol Zoo enough. The entry price is good, staff are helpful, there are loads of different and happy animals about plus you can grab some nice food while you're there. I cannot wait to go back and visit again! PS - thank you to Nick, who was my photographer for the day and took all these lovely photos :)

Lolita Lempicka Perfumes

It has been a long time since I bought myself perfume which is quite odd for someone who loves it. I think it's down to the fact I work somewhere that is highly perfumed... Anyway, I thought as a birthday treat I'd buy myself a couple of perfumes by French designer and perfume maker, Lolita Lempicka.

I opted for signature fragrance 'Lolita Lempicka', in the Eau de Toilette, and 'Si Lolita', in the Eau de Parfum. I got these for an absolute steal at Fragrance Direct and I always check them out to see if they stock a perfume that I really want (they don't always have the new fragrances but if they do it is always cheaper!).

First thing's first, how lovely are the bottles? I collect perfume bottles and these look great amongst my collection - they are quirky without looking cheap which is great for having on display. I think the apple bottle of the signature fragrance is beautiful and I'm hesitant to use up the perfume as it looks so pretty inside!

Lolita Lempicka EDT is what I'd think of as a girly, innocent fragrance. It has a floral scent to it with an almost powdery scent that lingers on the skin. It is quite a delicate and faint fragrance, which is perfect for day time wear. It does not last long on the skin but when it is on you get wafts of it which is nice. I have to say I was disappointed with this one - it is so much weaker than it's perfume version (EDT is less concentrated than EDP) and I wish now I had spent a little more for the classic, and highly rated, eau de parfum version. I like the fragrance but I'd love it to be stronger.

Si Lolita EDP, on the other hand, is unforgettable. It is less soft than the Lolita Lempicka, and has more fruity tones with hints of spice. It smells quite peppery at first but on my skin the fruity smell still comes through after the fragrance has settled on the skin. It smells quite sophisticated to me and I feel quite grown-up wearing it! I love wearing it for nights out and it lasts ages on the skin.

Out of the two I purchased, I personally recommend Si Lolita. I like the other perfume, it's just too light for myself. It will get it's wear as my daytime scent but next time I'll opt for the EDP instead!

Celebrate Body Lotion // LUSH Christmas 2015

Celebrate Body Lotion is an old favourite, returning to Lush's shelves for a third year running. And, I have to say, I am pretty happy about this one coming back as it is one of my all time favourite fragrances created by Lush!

Please excuse the old packaging in the picture - I stocked up on it last year so I had at least a years supply haha! So what is the heavenly fragrance I'm obsessed with? It has a strong citrus smell and I can really smell the lime oils in it which is great as I love the smell. It's also got cognac oil in to give it that boozy feel that is reminiscent of Christmas and New Year celebrations. I always worry about products with alcohol in because I don't particularly want to smell like an alcoholic but this has more of the fruity tones than than booze, so no need to worry about that.

The body lotion itself is quite unusual. It is very thick and rich, meaning it takes quite a while to sink into my skin. I imagine this is great for people with dryer skins or those who like to feel moisturisers on their skin. I personally prefer it to sink in straight away so I just apply Celebrate little and often, to give it chance to sink in faster, then I usually layer it with First Snow body powder (which has the same beautiful smell). It does leave my skin lovely and soft though - probably because most of it is made of cocoa butter :)

Purely because of the fragrance, I cannot recommend this body lotion enough. If you're after a highly moisturising, rich body cream then pop into Lush and grab yourself a pot of Celebrate sharpish!

Snowman Shower Jelly // LUSH Christmas 2015

I am so happy that Snowman Shower Jelly is returning to Lush this Christmas! Everyone needs one of these little snowmen in their lives :) I stocked up on so much of it last year (hence the old packaging style in the pictures) but it's honestly a product you couldn't get sick of smelling - it's amazing!

You can see from the picture how many oils are packed into this bad boy and it is HEAVEN to wash with. It feels silky smooth and your skin feels great after. The scent is strong, it's like a tropical fruit-meets-blackcurrant smell, and lasts a long time on the skin once you're out the shower. I am obsessed with the smell of Snowman jelly - seriously it's so uplifting and happy! Plus he's a little snowman shape!! Why do Lush make such cute things?!

To be honest, and brutal, I do chop my snowmen into pieces *eek*. Reason being is I find that the jellies form Lush don't lather that great on their own in one big lump but you can get a great lather when you chop them up and squish them into a shower sponge/scrunchie thing. You can also hold them under the tap and use them as bubble bath this way, they smell divine as bubbles!

Snowman Jelly is one of my top choices this year for Christmas from Lush. Have you tried him out before?

I Just Love it! My Gift Haul from ijustloveit.co.uk

Apparently I am a really awkward person to buy gifts for. I beg to differ! I just love gifts that are personal and have some thought behind them, and I always try and make sure my gifts to others reflect the care I've put into them. Like, if I were to buy for me, I'd go for something geeky, book-related or cute/animal/Disney themed. Easy right? And new website ijustloveit.co.uk can help you find, and maybe personalise, the perfect gifts for your loved ones (who may be awkward like me). Here are some recent things I picked up from I Just Love it!

As I travel a lot and have a long commute to work, I like a big wash bag that can accommodate all the make up and toiletries I like to take on my journeys. This deer wash bag is just gorgeous. I love the size of it and think it would be great for weekends away plus it has such a pretty deer print on the front. The bag itself is great quality and can be sponge washed should your foundation leak all over your bag (yup - I speak from experience).

You all know I'm a book lover right? Well I think the bookworm mug is perfect for all us tea-loving book readers. Mugs are always a good bet for gifts as they are useful for everyone. I like to incorporate mugs into gift hampers so, for example, with this bookworm mug you could perhaps include some hot chocolate or tea, a box of chocolates, maybe some fancy slippers and of course a good book to curl up with! It's a nice stocking-filler type present that still has a personal touch.

Finally, my new most-prized possession, my personalised book mark. It looks like such a luxury product when in fact it is a steal at £7.99 including the personalised initials on it. I read on my commute to work and I cannot tell you the amount of times I've stuffed my book into my bag and the paper bookmark has dropped out. This metal bookmark has a hook so it stays exactly where you left it so it's ideal for those who read when on the move. It's really lightweight too so, again, great for travelling and won't damage your books. I reckon I'm going to pick up one of these for all of my book loving friends; it's a gift you can really be proud of!

Not only are the gifts great from I Just Love It, but the service is wonderful too. All my items arrived quickly, even the personalised one! I cannot wait to use their personalising service on some of my Christmas gifts this year.
