BLOGGING // 10 Things I've Learnt From Blogging

I've been blogging for quite a while now under various blog domains and social media platforms. It's a hobby that has become a huge part of my life but I started out as a complete novice knowing absolutely nothing about blogging.

Here's ten things I have learnt from blogging...

1 - You can only write well when you feel inspired. You can't expect to write a great blog post if you don't feel inspired, whether it is an important subject you feel passionately about or a simple lipstick you've fallen in love with and have to share. Creativity is about being inspired - you can't force a creative work of art, it has to be natural!

2 - Blogging is not a competition. There are LOADS of bloggers out there. You can't avoid that. You can't compete with every single blogger in the world; there is no number one blogger who rules us all. Happiness from blogging comes from yourself - if you're produ of your blog you will feel successful no matter how it compares to other bloggers.

3 - People think you are celebrity if your blog has any kind of recognition. Don't get me wrong, I love when people I know praise my blog and say they enjoy my work. My blog has even helped me with job opportunities and it makes a great talking point but, when people realise my blog has followers other than the people I know, people seem to think I have some key to success. I don't at all. I blog because I love it and I enjoy whatever success, big or small, that comes out of it. It's funny how many people start to be your best friend or get in contact with you if they think you can give them help making their own blog successful.

4 - Blogging is really really REALLY hard work. Leading from that last point... I always tell people blogging is my second job. When they realise how little financial gain I get from my blog, they don't understand why I work so hard on it. The reason is that I have worked my ass off to get where I am today and I adore blogging and the community I'm in. Not many people become successful bloggers over night. It's not just about having a nice layout, or cool photography, it's about the work you put in to your blog. People can tell if your heart is in it or if you're just trying to earn money/fame from it.

5 - Sunlight is the only tool you need for good photos. I can't even count the number of times I've skipped a social event so I can stay indoors and make the most of natural lighting (sorry real life friends!). The flash on a camera usually makes photographs look all harsh and unnatural so it's always best to capture as many photos as possible in the lovely natural sunlight.

6 - It's difficult to make blogging your full time job. At the moment, the world of bloggers is over-saturated with so many blogs and it is a very small percentage of these bloggers who actually make a living off their blog. They are lucky and work extremely hard at what they do. It's not impossible to do, but I also think it is extremely difficult to try and blog for a wage. It's nicer to evolve a hobby into a job, rather than force your blog to make money and feel disappointed at the end. (PS - it is possible to make blogging your full time job, I just think people are a little disillusioned on how 'easy' it is... I certainly was when I first started)

7 - Bloggers have a lot of influence. This is something I didn't fully realise until I worked at Lush. I knew blogger's reviews had an impact on sales but the amount of people coming in wanting everything Zoella has, or the space bath bomb they saw on a blogger's instagram, is phenomenal. Readers put so much trust into blogger's words it is wise to think if what your writing is genuine and suitable for readers before posting something on your blog (this applies to everywhere on the Internet to be honest!).

8 - Jealousy always happens... but it gets you no where. Every blogger goes through a stage of being jealous of another blogger. Whether it's a friend, someone you admire, or some one you despise, when their blog is doing better than yours it is inevitable that you will feel jealous. This is a normal feeling but it's how you deal with it which makes the difference.

9 - You gain a load of new friends through blogging you'd never meet otherwise. My favourite thing about blogging is the interaction with readers and other writers. I have made friends with people all over the country and I always feel welcome in the blogging community. These are people I would have never had the chance to speak to had I not started my blog and I would have never imagined that I could get to know so many people when I first started!

10 - Blogging is something to be proud of. It wasn't until this year I started opening up to my friends and family about my blog. I refused to tell my boyfriend my blog's address (he googled it anyway!) and kept it a secret as much as possible. It wasn't until bloggers were mentioned in an interview and I quietly mentioned I had a blog that I even considered blogging to be something worthy of mentioning. Having a blog has helped me so much such as arranging blogger events and getting really cool opportunities to go to events I couldn't without my blog. Now I always tell people about my blog... I even have business cards and put it on my CV! Don't hide your blog when you start out, share it with people and they will enjoy sharing that piece of Internet with you :) You never know where it might lead!

  2. I agree with you on many points specially the picture topic. You cannot make you photographs looks as amazing with flash as they would with natural light! It just isn't the same. Thanks for the other tips HUGS
