LIFE // Why I am a Vegetarian

Not many people know this but I have been a vegetarian all my life. Growing up, it has always been an embarrassment to me and most people I know don't realise I'm veggie until we go out for food because I hate telling people I don't eat meat. In fact, it's almost a burden to me yet I still stand by my not eating meat. The most frequent vegetarian question I get is 'Why don't you eat meat?' usually followed by despair and complete bewilderment of the person asking. Well, it's a really really simple answer.

I don't think I can ever remember a time where I have eaten meat. Because of this, I have been subjected to nasty comments, people saying I'm going to die in my twenties or that I definitely have anaemia because of my lifestyle choice (which, I don't by the way). I'm constantly told I'm missing out on bacon and burgers in which I have to say I'm not because I've never eaten bacon so can't know what I'm missing out on.

And to all those people who try to convert me, it won't work. I haven't eaten meat for over twenty years so you can't persuade me otherwise. I make a point to never ever preach about the benefits of being a vegetarian because, quite frankly, it's annoying when people tell you you are a bad person for choosing to eat meat and I know exactly how it feels because I'm always being made out to be weird for not eating it. I don't mind people eating meat around me and it certainly doesn't offend me if you love eating meat... which is why I don't get it when people are so offended/worried/shocked/confused about why I don't eat it.

So why don't I eat it? It's not to do with animal rights, although I am passionate about animal welfare and I encourage everyone to buy free range and happy meat. It's not for any health reason. I'm not a particularly fussy eater. I was fussy in my childhood but now as long as I'm sure it's not meat, I'll try it out. It's just a simple answer that most people who eat food can relate to in some degree. I simply don't like the texture. That's it.

Food texture is weird anyway if you think about it - some of it is solid, some liquid, some like a paste, some chunky... it comes in all textures. And meat, to me, is a weird weird texture. It looks like flesh. I even get to the point where I won't eat some Quorn products (veggie alternatives) because the texture is so much like meat, I can't believe it's not (I know, it is ridiculous). I'll even go as far as making my meat-eating friends eat some of my non-meat food to confirm that it's ok for me to eat haha!

Maybe I'm on my own with the food texture thing... surely there are more of us vegetarians that do so because of the texture?! Either way, meat lover or not, we shouldn't have to justify why we eat what we do. It's our own personal choice and as long as we aren't damaging our health, why question it? I respect everyone's food choices and I just wish more people would be OK with us veggies out there! Next time someone asks me... I'm gonna direct them to this blog post ;-)

  1. Relating to this post so much! I stopped eating meat almost 5 years ago now, and I always get nervous whenever I tell new people about it. Some people can be so rude saying things like "Oh, I'm gonna try to convert you!" but I don't understand how what I choose to eat effects anyone else? Unless they're cooking for me, but then I always offer to bring my own food.

I know what you mean about the texture too, although I've also never really liked the taste of meat either!

  2. My old boss has too been a veggie since she was little for the exact same reason, the texture of the meat.
She will eat other products like marshmallows and jelly that have animal in them so not 100% veggie, but when it comes to meat she won't touch the stuff and hasn't for 30+ years because of the texture.

I've been a veggie for 15 years now myself and someone always has to ask a million questions why I choose not to eat meat, why it's bad for me etc etc. I am anaemic but that's more to do with mother nature and the monthly gifts she gives me that last months on an end, not because I don't eat meat. People have also tried to get me to eat meat which is so frustrating, I don't stop them eating meat so they shouldn't bother us to eat it. >.<
My view is if I don't eat it, there is more for them so why are they complaining?

Ps. I've ate bacon, you are NOT missing out! It's vile! Even when I did eat meat I couldn't stand bacon. Blah blahhh blahhhh.

    Juyey xx
