'A Long Way Down' by Nick Hornby review

I seem to have done a lot of book reviews on my blog recently. Today is the turn of A Long Way Down by British author Nick Hornby. Strangely enough, I studied many Nick Hornby books while I was university as I did a popular fiction module and I quite enjoyed the way Hornby writes. His books all have this typical British sense of humour and he is brilliant at capturing the characters' voice, which is vital when writing a book like A Long Way Down.

A Long Way Down is about four people who meet when they all try to commit suicide. Despite it's rather macabre plot, the book is comical and light hearted, whilst still touching on the sensitive topics, such as mental health, loneliness, disability and of course suicidal thoughts, in a respectful way. It's an interesting read.

'712 More Things to Write About' review

Creativity comes in bursts. Some days I cannot stop coming up with ideas to write about, so many in fact I have to save them into my phone, and other days I am totally stumped. Writer's block can be a bit of a bitch if you write a lot like me because you start to feel hopeless and that you will never write again.

Is there any cure for writer's block? Keep writing. This is harder than it sounds, I know, so I have enlisted the help of 712 More Things to Write About. Yes, a book. I spotted it in the sale at Urban Outfitters and, having had my eye on it for a while, thought it must have been fate I bumped into this book when I had the worst case of being-too-nervous-to-write syndrome. It's a book of creative ideas to get your pen writing instantly and I think it is fabulous for anyone wanting to write, whether it be blogging or trying to write a novel, poem, etc!

'Warm Bodies' by Isaac Marion

Warm Bodies, by Isaac Marion, is said to be a Zombie Romance. Now, Zombie and romance are quite unusual words to have paired together when trying to describe a book so I was intrigued before opening the first page.

I had read somewhere that Marion's book is the Romeo and Juliet of the zombie world which, as a self-confessed Shakespeare geek, made me a bit sceptical. I don't really like Romeo and Juliet in all honesty so I didn't have the highest of hopes however, as I made my way through Warm Bodies, I found the book was a complete surprise.

Lush Cosmetics Valentine's Day 2016

I have been eagerly awaiting this year's Valentine's Day range from Lush. I pretty much adored everything from the collection last year, in particular the Prince Charming shower gel, so I had high hopes for this year. And, I hate to say this, but I was a little disappointed with the selection for 2016!

Having said that, there area few things I picked up and would recommend those who fancy a pamper, or looking for gifts for loved ones this year.

Things to do in Oxford

I think it is very hard to beat a spontaneous day trip to somewhere new, and this happened to me last week when my friend Charlotte and I decided to take a drive down to the beautiful city of Oxford.

I had never been to Oxford but was quite excited because one of my favourite book series had a section set in the grounds of Oxford University (the book series is His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman if you're curious), and I had always been intrigued by the architecture of the place - especially since the Harry Potter films came out! It was also the inspiration behind Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as he studied maths at the university. So, for a book nerd like me, Oxford seemed like the ideal place to potter around in. We split the day into two halves; Shopping/food and 'sightseeing'.

101 in 1001 Update

It doesn't feel that long since I complied my 101 in 1001 days challenge. For those who aren't sure what on Earth I'm referring to, then it is basically a challenge where you set yourself 101 goals to accomplish in 1001 days. It is a bit like a bucket list, but you have a time frame to do it so the idea is you have more incentive to get the tasks done!

My list took ages to create. I knew there were loads of things I wanted to achieve before the 1001 days had passed because I have been going through some major lifestyle changes and I knew if I didn't push myself I'd get no where! So, did I manage to accomplish any of the goals now I'm a third of the way through the challenge?!
