Classic Films You Need To Watch

If you are a movie geek, there are certain films you know you just have had to have seen. I love films, but I have to confess that I tend to stick to the safety of the genres I know I love. I even go as far as judging the film by it's cover - if I don't like the movie artwork or posters, I'll probably give it a miss.

This is a shame really as I end up missing fantastic films that are seen as classics or a 'must-watch'. My mom even took actions to encourage me to watch some of her favourites by buying me a load of the classic movies from over the years. Have I watched them yet? Of course not (Well, I've watched some just not all of them!).

As a self-confessed geek, I reckon it's about time I changed this and sat down to make time to watch some of the most loved movies of all time. I've been set the challenge to watch the following films featured on this list that I wouldn't normally go for, so here's what I'll be settling down to watch in the near future.

The Color Purple

The book of the same title by Alice Walker is one that I have always been itching to read, but I can't say I know that much about the film! It's set in Georgia in the early twentieth century, and follows the life of Celie, a black woman who has to overcome the racism and oppression of females during the time. I know the book is heartbreaking as it tackles issues such as rape, abusive relationships and racism, but I think it will be a fantastic and gripping film. Steven Spielburg directs it and its stars Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey so sounds like a winner to me.

Gone With The Wind

I have avoided 'old movies' like the plague since I can remember and, unfortunately, Gone With The Wind is one of those that I class as 'old' and 'boring'. Having said that, I am more than willing to give it a chance! Another adaptation from a novel, Gone With The Wind is a romance about the infamous Scarlett O'Hara who is known for using men to get her own way. Her life is flipped upside down when the War begins, and she meets her match in Captain Rhett Butler. Apparently 1400 women were auditioned for the part of Scarlett!

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I have to confess, I've actually started watching this one when it was first released. The film follows the life of Benjamin Button who miraculously ages backwards - he is born an old man and grows younger. It's a long film and one I didn't finish because I was too distracted to watch properly, hopefully I'll enjoy it more the second time around!

Dial M For Murder

This is a film I've not heard of before but now I'm reading about it, I am intrigued to watch it! Directed by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock, this thrilling detective movie is about a former Tennis Pro, Tony, trying to murder his wife after finding out she had an affair. Seems a bit harsh, but I'm sure there's more to the story that I will have to find out when I watch it! This film is highly regarded as one of the best thrillers made, so I'm looking forward to sitting down to watch this.
